One in five of us made a pledge to ourselves this time last year to find a new job in the next twelve months. Perhaps you were one of them but you never got round to it, or maybe it’s only during the past year that you’ve felt the urge to try something new. Well, with 2017 upon us now is the perfect time to start making plans.
Brexit is uncertain terrain and there’s little telling quite how it will affect UK jobs over the next couple of years however in this current moment the jobs market is, in the words of Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) Director of Policy Tom Hadley, “thriving”.
The UK jobs market has, according to Hadley, “taken Brexit in its stride”, as permanent placements have been in growth now for three consecutive months and REC jobs data shows that 23 per cent of businesses plan to take on more permanent staff in the next three months. What does this mean for you? Well there’s never a ‘perfect’ moment to change careers – there are just too many moving parts – but now is definitely a pretty good one.
3 steps to making your move
Many of us set ourselves goals for the beginning of a new year: get back in the gym, take up a new hobby, find a new job and so on. Sadly our lofty ambitions often fall at the first couple of hurdles and we’re back in the crisp cupboard by the second week of January. Make sure this isn’t the case for you by putting together an action plan ahead of time.
Different industries require a slightly different approach but by and large there are three key actions that apply across the board when considering a new career.
Firstly, know what you want. What are you good at and what do you enjoy doing? Most of us work for around 34 hours a week – three more than our Parisian colleagues – so it’s important that we’re spending this time doing something that isn’t affecting our wellbeing. There are far too many employees out there who wake up each morning with a sense of dread at having to go to work, but it doesn’t have to be that way!
Focus on finding that overlap on the Venn diagram between ‘work I enjoy’, ‘work I’m good at’ and ‘work I have experience in’. You can always ask one of our consultants to take at look at your CV and provide advice on your next move.
Secondly,commit to your plan. As soon as you know what you want, commit to it. It helps to make your plans known to those close to you – friends and family only; your boss might not take to the idea! – as this creates pressure (the good kind) on yourself to deliver. How many people would run that half marathon in October had they not already told everyone in January that they were doing so?
Try also committing your plan to paper. Having something in writing can also provide motivation, especially when you’ve set yourself incremental goals to achieve e.g. by the end of January: identify a career, by the end of February: contact a recruiter, by the end of March: expect invitations to interview and so on.
Thirdly, stick with it. Be ambitious with your career goals, but be realistic in the time scale you give yourself. Changing career is a big deal – the average UK worker spends around five years in each role – and isn’t something that should be rushed through during commutes home.
If you’re making slightly slower progress than you had hoped then take a look at the people you’re surrounding yourself with and the networks you’re in. Mixing with successful professionals in your desired field is not just good for unearthing new opportunities but also helps boost morale and sustain motivation. As entrepreneur and career coach Scott Dinsmore said in his TED talk, “The fastest way to do things you think can’t be done is to surround yourself with people who are already doing them”.
